eco-guides:
guiding homeowners on the path to sustainability

Hello eco-guides homeowners and service partners!

We hope you enjoyed the holidays and the unusual weather we had in Portland last month.  While we personally got out the sleds and enjoyed the forced slowdown, we didn't enjoy the spike in our energy bills.  You can read more about that on our new blog.  Look for (not quite daily) tips and musings around all things 'green' from your eco-guides at

eco-guides tips:

• Bookmark our blog, and join us in the discussion of all things "green" in Portland.  Expect more in the near future on solar, good "green" reads and some innovative water conservation devices.
• Attend a Fix-it Fair sponsored by the Portland's Office of Sustainability.  You might just see Laura Baldschun there acting in her role as Master Recycler.  Congratulations to Laura on completing her course last fall!

eco-guides happenings:

• eco-guides now offers presentations for groups.  If you know of a group that would like to hear more about "Sustainable (Grocery) Shopping" or "Our Path to Lowering Our Carbon Footprint", let us know.
Let us hear from you - how are you working towards a more sustainable and healthy home?

Kind regards,
Lisa Ard
Owner

Go “Green”

Are you interested in sustainable living, but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone. A recent survey showed 62% of respondents answered “I don’t know where to start” when asked why they didn’t feel they’d done enough to address their environmental impact.

Over three home visits, Eco-Guides will help homeowners with where to start, by assessing a homeowner’s impact, informing them of sustainable choices and helping them to implement change. “From our efforts to ‘green’ our own homes, we found that there was a lot of information on sustainability, from many different sources and it was often difficult to determine what applied to a particular home based on its age, its occupants and their lifestyle.” says Lisa Ard, Owner.

Some of the ways Eco-Guides make it simple to go “green”:

• Offering researched recommendations that are specific to their clients’ and their homes
• Providing an Eco-Guidebook
• Offering environmentally-friendly products and service referrals

Eco-Guides’ five areas of focus include:  energy efficiency, water conservation, green gardening, waste reduction and toxics elimination.  “Through our partnerships with local agencies, water bureaus, and service companies, we are helping to spread the message of living sustainable,” says Lisa Ard.

Eco-Guides guide homeowners on the path to sustainability

A new home consulting service in the Portland area aims to reduce homeowners’ environmental footprint one home at a time. Through a series of home visits, Eco-Guides will assess a homeowner’s impact, inform them of sustainable choices and help them to implement changes. Eco-Guides’ five areas of focus include: energy efficiency, water conservation, green gardening, waste reduction and toxics elimination.

“From our efforts to ‘green’ our own homes, we found that there was a lot of information on sustainability, from many different sources and it was often difficult to determine what applied to a particular home based on its age, its occupants and their lifestyle. We aim to make it simple for homeowners to do the right thing for the environment. In addition we show our homeowners the impact they're having and what they can achieve in terms of dollars saved, gallons of water conserved, waste reduced, etc.,” says Lisa Ard, Owner of Eco-Guides.

Some of the ways Eco-Guides make it simple to go “green”:

• “We do the research and deliver the recommendations that will work for our homeowners”, says Laura Baldschun, Owner of Eco-Guides
• Eco-Guides delivers their expertise over three home visits, so a homeowner isn’t overwhelmed with information
• They provide an Eco-Guidebook full of checklists, additional reading, helpful brochures, rebate information, etc.
• Eco-Guides offers environmentally-friendly products and service referrals
• “We remain an ongoing resource for our homeowners long after the home visits. For instance, a year after our consultation a homeowner may have their dishwasher go out; we'd like to help them easily select an energy- and water-efficient dishwasher plus take advantage of any rebates or incentives”, says Lisa Ard.

Eco-Guides partners with local agencies, water bureaus, and service companies to help spread the message of living sustainably.

Well, my daughter-in-law has started a Keep It Green (I Think) business. Here is the Link. You must decide for yourself. Being a son of a tobacco farmer, I know a little about conservation, but that does not qualify me to explain this business. I invite you to visit this site and inquire if you can use their services.

Why Computers Sometimes Crash! by Dr. Seuss.
Posted by: harold - on Thursday, June 30, 2005 - 09:32 AM

Technology

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted
at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk
abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the
double-clicking
icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the
index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna
crash!
If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is
connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to
another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your
icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and
go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.
When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro
code instructions is causing unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the
memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the
computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Well, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you?
Thank you, Bill Gates, for bringing all this into our lives.

Banking email/internet fraud exposed by White Hat Hackers.
Posted by: jonathan - on Saturday, November 15, 2003 - 04:14 PM

Technology

Check out this very good story over at Security Focus. This is the story of how some White Hat Hackers tracked down some spammers that are trying to con people into giving up their banking information. Basically, the spam appears to come from CitiBank, and it asks people to go to a web page that appears to be a CitiBank web page, but the pop-up that comes up and asks you to verify your information actually goes to a server in Russia that has nothing to do with CitiBank.

This story shows how spammers and criminals are getting more and more cunning. And it shows how you have to be careful in determining where emails are really coming from. This scam affects CitiBank, but even if you don't use them, someone in the future could do the same with any other bank (or with something like PayPal as we see in the previous article about the new Worm going around). Read the article and be careful with email claiming to be from your bank and asking you for personal information.

Nasty worm in the wild. Sends email that appears to be from Paypal.

Be careful with any email claiming to be from PayPal and saying that your account is about to expire. A new worm is running around that cunningly tries to con people out of their PayPal information. I believe the worm is based on Microsoft software flaws, but the email could be sent to any Operating System. Check out the details here . More information can also be found at sophos.com. They give some very good advice on this page:

"Note: do not act on web links or attachments sent to you in emails which claim to come from banks or financial companies. The apparent source of an email is too easily forged."
